Part 2: Past Simple vs Past Continuous

Past Simple

  • Completed actions in the past
  • Specific time in the past
  • Interrupts a longer action
  • With: yesterday, last week, ago, at 3 PM

Past Continuous

  • Ongoing action in the past
  • Background action (when interrupted)
  • Action in progress at a past time
  • Often used with Past Simple
⚠️ Important: Past Continuous often appears with Past Simple in the same sentence. The Past Continuous shows the longer/ongoing action, and Past Simple shows the shorter action that interrupted it.
Simple: "I cooked dinner yesterday." (completed action)
Continuous: "I was cooking when he arrived." (ongoing action interrupted)
Both: "I was cooking when he arrived." (was cooking = ongoing, arrived = interruption)

Part 4: Planning Future Events

Reminder: Sentence Order

WHO → VERB → WHAT → WHEN → WHERE

Note: WHEN and WHERE can be in either order. Both are correct!

Present Continuous vs Future Continuous for Future Plans

Present Continuous (am/is/are + verb-ing):

  • Planned/scheduled events
  • Focus: the plan
"I am meeting Susan tomorrow at 2 PM." (planned)
"We are flying to Paris next week." (arranged)

Future Continuous (will be + verb-ing):

  • What will be happening at a future time
  • Focus: the ongoing action
"I will be meeting clients at 2 PM." (in progress)
"At 3 PM, she will be starting." (action happening)
Quick Rule: Present Continuous = "I have a plan" | Future Continuous = "At this time, this will be happening"
